Kaikoura – New Zealand

Christmas 2008 saw the Batrouney’s holiday on the New Zealand south island.

We flew out of Sydney on Saturday 20th December to Christchurch. We hired our car for the two weeks and headed north to Kaikoura.

On the way to Kaikoura we stopped at the Brew Moon Garden Cafe & Brewery. This is about 25 minutes north of Christchurch and a great stop for lunch. I tried their tasting selection which was a small glass of each of their four on-site brewed beers.

We spent two nights in Kaikoura staying at Sails Motel which is a Boutique Motel with great hospitality.

Kaikoura is an eco tourism destination with lots of wildlife and great walks. We were not there in whale season but whale watching is popular. Instead we spent our time on long walks, eating lobster and watching the fur seals.

The peninsula walk is well worth doing.  We did the full circuit which took about 3 hours.

Kaikoura has fantastic crayfish with many road side stalls cooking it fresh.
