Wednesday 6th January 2010 we headed south from Alice Springs along the Old Ghan Railway through Finke. Our intention was to meet up with the Oodnadatta Track and then head west until we picked up the highway. Then south to Coober Pedy.

Half way between Finke and Marla on the Oodnadatta Track is a short detour to the Geographic Centre of Australia. Fittingly an Australian Flag is flying from the actual centre.

This little detour cost us two tyres – the big surprise was that one of the lugs was completely torn off. These were brand new Coopers and even the Cooper Dealer was as surprised as us for this to happen as they gave me two brand new tyres when we returned to Canberra.

After a very long day driving we were glad to make it to Coober Pedy and treat ourselves again to a night in an underground hotel.
There is not much in Coober Pedy and so the next morning was going to be another long drive to Port Augusta. However the Old Timers Mine is worth a visit.
