Is Melbourne losing it coffee spunk?

A leisurely Sunday morning in Singapore a few weeks ago really had me questioning if my beautiful Melbourne was losing its edge as the worlds best place for coffee.

Undoubtedly Melbourne is the home for espresso, latte and cappuccino – underpinned by a trip last week to Sydney where every coffee place I went to tried to pass off a latte with chocolate dust as a cappuccino. But in Singapore, and increasingly in Asia, I am seeing great coffee embraced by the more exotic ways of brewing – Dutch Press, Cold Brew and Aeropress.

A great example was Watanbee Coffee which is a Japanese cafe & bar in Singapore. Their Toast Set with Filtered Coffee is a great combination and very chic as the coffee is server in a little chemistry setup.

Also one of my favourite places is Coffee Academics in Singapore. Here I went for the Aeropress option which gives a great flavour with low acidity. Once again the chemistry approach to serving as it came in a Beaker.

The new Asian Cafe’s do have the advantage of not having to maintain the latte / cappuccino heritage that Melbourne coffee shops do and given the milk in Asia tastes so poorly, these black coffee brewing options are really their best way to produce great coffee.

To me Melbourne, mainly due to the skills of its Barista’s, will always be the best for espresso brews as this style of brewing is so dependent on the Barista but Asia will mark out a unique coffee territory that gives a welcome change in coffee drinking.

Note: I am biased to Melbourne Bartista’s given Molly is one!!!
